Arabesque
Paul Mantes
1921 – 2004
Pencil drawing 64 X 48 cm mounted by a black Marie-Louise in an Art-Deco frame in Macassar ebony 92 X 72 cm, signed and dated 1949, studio stamp in back.
Although a Major of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and holder of the Second Grand Prix de Rome, Paul Mantes had a long career as an Architect, practicing painting and drawing as a secret garden. If he pursued an activity of “surrealist painter”, his oldest works are more of a seductive Art-Deco, close to that of artists like Poughéon, Dupas, Billotey or Tamara de Lempicka, of great mastery. of drawing than of composition.
Our drawing, combining horse and naked woman is a perfect example.
