Oil on paper mounted on original cardboard 31 X 46 cm, mounted in a fun, almost “seaside” frame that goes well with the subject with a stamped decoration. gilded stucco wood 41 X 56 cm (small accidents). Circa 1900.
This work, acquired from a well-known antique dealer in the Place de Pau, had just been exhibited at the Salon des Amis des Arts in that city as evidenced by the packer’s label on the back.
It must be said that at that time, this Salon was among the most popular in the Province with an excellent clientele, and we see that the Artist, although famous, a regular exhibitor of the Salon des Artistes Français and the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, did not hesitate to present works in which it was acquired.
It must be said that the subject, very animated, probably located in Normandy, is charming, with this mother knitting on the beach at the foot of the cliffs, her little daughter sitting at her side, the bathers, visibly courageous, who come back bundled up in their Bathrobes, and the incredible hue of the sky and the sea standing out against that of the cliffs,…
