The mouth of the Bidassoa and the Jaïzkibel
René Choquet
1872 – 1958
Oil on panel 27 X 35 cm, mounted in a molded wooden frame 40 X 47 cm. Titled and dated on the back “Le Jaiquibel” (sic), August 1930 6 p.m. About thirty years ago, when I began to defend Basque and Landes regionalism, one of my colleagues saw me buying a painting by Choquet and said to me “Ah! You love this Raphael of donkeys!” Well yes, and frankly, I think that this title would not have displeased him, he who made a specialty of equines of all kinds, horses, donkeys, pottocks and other mules… This one is different, of a synthesis of the composition almost nabi, with its horizontals alternately dark and bright just punctuated by a sailing boat… Do not hesitate to ask us for photos or additional information by email or telephone.
