A garden corner
Oil on canvas (from Maison Chabod 20 rue Jacob in Paris) 81 X 45, mounted in a posterior flocked baguette 91 X 55 cm.
An annotation on the back tells us that it was sold by the artist’s sister in 1945. While some claim that he would be one with Joseph Van Loix, I have found no proof. We know that the artist first had a career as a painter and decorator at the Montigny sur Loing factory, then that he left for Tunisia from which he brought back many orientalist paintings, a posthumous retrospective of which took place in 1930 at the Gallery. Carpenter in Paris.
The Mediterranean character of this garden makes me think that it belongs to this period. All chiseled by the light, this corner of the garden with a staircase bordered by pots of flowers, fuchsias, roses and lavender, is magnified by its elongated format which particularly emphasizes it.
