Fighting cocks
Antonio Uria Monzon
1929-1996
Oil on panel 120 X 80.5 cm, mounted in a beautiful modern black and gold frame with reverse slope 137 X 97.5 cm.
Everything we love about Uria Monzon, is found in this work: the opposition of colors to the strength of the line and the subject, two roosters, one white and one black, fighting for a hen in the farmyard, allegory of the confrontation of Good and Evil in a whirlwind of light and movement particularly highlighted by the background from which the white rooster seems to spring up.
The Spanish Artist exiled first in Paris then alternately in Ciboure and Agen (his wife’s hometown) developed a very personal universe, nourished by reworked and perfectly assimilated influences such as Goya and Picasso.
If part of his work consisted in making hyperrealistic portraits, especially of children, a whole part is devoted to his other passion: bullfighting, mainly focused on movement masterfully rendered in watercolor or oil.
