Lady with a big hat
Pastel on canvas primed bistre 55 X 46 cm, mounted in a large gilded frame 75 X 66 cm by spinettes.
Son and student of Albert, Robert Besnard leaves us regret what he could have left as works if he died prematurely for France during the Great War, so much his talent was already obvious !
The two works (the other one is sold) I have the pleasure of presenting today have a funny anecdote: the sketch on canvas, probably made around 1900/1905, served as a frame for the work completed on paper and we discovered it during the dismantling. !
Left in the sketch state and therefore unsigned, only the face is pushed in a technique almost “fauve style” that would not have disowned Wlaminck or Van Dongen, but perhaps too revolutionary for the model that has not wished to see it finished !
