Big drawing “La grève aux pins à Pontaillac”
Amédée Baudit
1827-1890
Made in pencil and blended on paper previously washed with gray, tiny highlights of white stone enliven the sea and the sky. Some scattered rednesses. Monogrammed, dated 1868 and located in Pontaillac (near Royan in Charente-Maritime). 32 X 61 cm approximately at sight, mounted by a sober Marie-Louise cream with golden fillets in an oak frame 53 X 79 cm.
Some consider Amédée Baudit as Swiss because he was born in Geneva, but he settled permanently in his adopted land of Bordeaux from 1865 after studying in Geneva Lyon and Paris and he died there .
Considered a of those who made the link between the Barbizon School and the modern Bordeaux Landscape School, his drawing talent was also praised by his contemporaries, with reason as evidenced by this superb large format sheet, a masterly perspective which is reminiscent of another Master: Rembrandt in his fabulous “Landscape with three trees”.
