A great landscape of Pyrénées
Alfred Godchaux
1839-1907
Oil on canvas 62 X 92 cm, circa 1880, two small invisible restorations of front, fine network of stabilized cracks inherent to the support.
The enigma Godchaux finally raised” titled the late Sylvio Brianti in his notice on the famous artists.
Indeed, the auctioneers attributing a little randomly the works bearing this signature sometimes to the father (Alfred 1839-1907) sometimes to the son (Eugène dit Emile 1878-1956), even to the sculptor Roger (1878-1958), the researchers who relied on it helped to perpetuate certain errors.
Her genealogical research in collaboration with Claudine Godchaux finally clarified a lot of things …
Here we have a work by Alfred, “the favorite helper of Courbet who taught him the job with boots behind” but recognized his talent by saying ” You are a painter! “, With the touch and colours features, classically signed on the handle of the brush in the still fresh painting, showing a Pyrenean landscape with, in the background, snow-capped mountains from which go down a torrent and a farmer.
A clear and bright palette combines a beautiful gilded frame with the sheet 82 X 111 cm.
