Pencil drawing and stump 64 X 48 cm mounted by a black Marie-Louise in an Art-Deco frame in blond bramble 81 X 64 cm, monogrammed, studio stamp on the back .
Although a Major of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and holder of the Second Grand Prix de Rome, Paul Mantes had a long career as an Architect, practicing painting and drawing as a secret garden. If he pursued an activity of “surrealist painter”, his oldest works are more of a seductive, antiquating Art-Deco, close to that of artists like Poughéon, Dupas, Billotey or Tamara de Lempicka, of great mastery of both drawing and composition.
Our drawing, combining an armored knight on a prancing horse behind an angel blowing a trumpet is a perfect example.
