The basque vultures
Gabriel Roby
1878-1917
Oil on canvas oval 130 X 100 cm, presented in its original golden frame a little rugged 150 X 100 cm.
This incredible painting that we propose to you is the work of Gabriel ROBY, wonderful Basque painter student of Bonnat and died too young in war. As I said about Charles Ogier, whose works we are also presenting, one of the greatest challenges, but also one of the greatest satisfactions of our job as an art dealer, is to rediscover a forgotten painter whose talent is indisputable to put it back on the front of the stage to the delight of amateurs. In a format usually used to the works intended to be exhibited at the Salon (which was perhaps the case of this one : inscriptions and labels on the back) he shows us a vulture perched on a cliff (certainly of the Artzamendi near Itxassou in the Basque Country) while another hovers in the sky looking for his pittance …
As often with Roby, the work of the material is extraordinary, while glazed in a texture close to abstraction in the sky.
Do not hesitate to ask for photos or additional information by mail or phone. In partnership with Galerie Lafouresse, we are specialists in paintings on the Basque Country, the Landes and the Bassin d’Arcachon.
