The ocean behind the dune
Jean-Roger Sourgen
1883-1978
Oil on panel 50 X 86 cm, mounted in a beautiful carved oak frame 61 X 97 cm.
If it is no necessary to present Jean-Roger Sourgen, this was not always the case : I remember an extraordinary large format pastel for which it took me several months to make clear to my clients that it was very good and that they had to give me 1200 francs !
It was yesterday, it seems to me…
Emblematic painter of the Landes, he described them with love and poetry all his life, a work interspersed with forays into the neighboring Basque Country and a trip to Morocco, but these subjects remain anecdotal in the midst of a Landes mink constantly renewed and whose best works of the first period can compete with those of the Nabis painters.
The painter poet of the Landes whose motto on the pediment of his house in Hossegor was “Dreaming, painting and hunting” gives us here an emblematic picture of this region, built around parallels: sky, dune, path, heather and broom for horizontal, slender pines for vertical, showing a little bit of the ocean in the background.
Specialists of the Artist, we are constantly looking for his works.
Do not hesitate to ask us for photos or additional information by email or phone. In partnership with Galerie Lafouresse, we are specialists in paintings on the Basque Country, the Landes and the Arcachon Bassin.
