Oil on canvas 58.5 X 80.3 cm, circa 1880/90. Very heavy !
When I acquired this strange painting, I still remember the excitement that animated us so much the dichotomy between the way of painting and the era is great.
Certainly, painting with such impastos was not unique in the second half of the 19th century: from Narcisse Diaz de la Peña to Van Gogh via Monticelli, several painters tried it to communicate their artistic vision, but the he era is more “licked” and despite the surging impressionist, artists will continue for a long time to avoid overlapping too many layers.
This view of a port, probably Mediterranean, where boats are moored in the distance, is taken from the opposite rocky coast, lit by a sunset whose gradients hem the waves and color the foam. An illegible diagonal signature in the rocks on the left. The light catching the reliefs, it is delicate to render the nuances, so I put two series of photos with different lighting, the reality being probably in between. Two small paint flakes in the rocks on the left whose varnish has changed a little and should be taken up.
I deliver this painting to you as long as I can still climb into my attic where I installed my “ripener”, namely a kind of painting library where I stored quality works, but with an illegible, even anonymous signature in waiting for serendipity to make me meet his brother in a catalog, book or exhibition, allowing me to identify them …
Oh! It still happens to me three or four times a year, sometimes on works acquired 30 years ago, sometimes the previous month.
