Portrait of Mr. Chabance
G. C. Michelet
Pastel on paper 57 X 38 cm, put flat by a professional on neutral pH cardboard, mounted in its original frame art-nouveau 72 X 51 cm whose edges have gaps, carries a label on the glass showing that it was exhibited, probably at the Salon.
We know very little about GC Michelet, except that he was born in 1873, he had an early career as a portraitist in eastern France, especially in Nancy, then, in the 20s, seduced by the light of the East, he settled in Syria as an Orientalist painter, leaving landscapes of both Syria and nearby Lebanon, as well as Oriental portraits.
He also taught painting classes open to all who had a lot of success.
These two portraits come from the same Nancy collection. Mr. Chabance, artistic director of lyric theater and husband of Madeleine Bray singer is represented here in bust, beard and mustache “imperial”, in suit and tie on the bright background of a window veiled curtains.
