Spectacular seascape with sailboats
Signed and dated 70 (for 1870), classically on the handle of the brush in the still fresh paste, this spectacular oil on canvas 89 X 146 cm is mounted in an old 101 X 158 cm frame which is slightly uneven.
“The Godchaux enigma finally solved” headlined the late Sylvio Brianti in his notice on the famous artists.
Indeed, the auctioneers ascribing a little random works bearing this signature sometimes to the father (Alfred 1839-1907) sometimes to the son (Eugène dit Emile 1878-1956), sometimes to the sculptor Roger (1878-1958), relying on researchers helped to perpetuate certain errors.
Her genealogical research in collaboration with Claudine Godchaux finally clarified a lot of things…
We have here a work of Alfred with the characteristic touch and colors, which was Courbet’s favorite rapin which he said he had taught him the job with boots in the behind! We also find this side both realistic and suggestive of the Master that he applies by placing only three brush strokes, but so precisely that we can see better what is represented than if it were reality! ! Look at the crumbled pink plaster of the facades pierced with windows with lopsided shutters, the wandering of the characters or the wind which drives away the clouds, revealing a “gendarme’s breeches” ..
We have a caricature by Gabriel Roques representing (sic) Godchaux “Artist painter Head of the School of Luminists” and showing it plugged into a battery and using a badger as a brush !!
