A young mother
French school circa 1800
Oil on paper mounted on cardboard 16 X 16 cm, mounted in a pretty gilded frame 20 X 20 cm from the House “Au Griffon” Niodot Fils in Paris. Difficult to do more neoclassical! What does this painting tell us about the quality and delicacy inversely proportional to the surface ?
Even if the brown background is a little tense, we discover curious elements with regard to the subject: a ring sealed in the wall and a manger which contrast with the directorate / consulate chair covered with a sumptuous embroidered coat on which it is sitting, her chest bared and her gaze lost and a little melancholy downwards.
All this sets my imagination in motion: perhaps she is contemplating a sleeping baby that she has just breastfed ? But why in a stable ? A young nobleman who hides with her child to escape revolutionary vindicts ?
A little something in the touch reminds me of a feminine sensibility, close to that of the immense Constance Mayer. Deserves further research.
