oil on canvas prepared using a process of his invention (Castelucho process) 81 X 65 cm, mounted in a Parnassian frame with an inverted slope, later but which suits him well 100 X 85 cm. Circa 1910. Although Catalan by origin, he settled in Paris at just 22 years old where, in parallel with his teaching at the Académie Colarossi then at the Grande Chaumière, he regularly exhibited at the Parisian Salons. Le Bénézit says “in a frank technique of robust impastos framing a synthetic drawing”, it is difficult not to agree! The recent studio sale from his niece has allowed us to better know the work of this all too rare artist who, both in terms of themes and broad and accurate touch, is often compared to his contemporary Sorolla y Bastida. Our painting is a remarkable example with this young woman sure of her beauty taking off her shirt while sketching a smile in front of, we guess, a beloved lover. The boldness of the composition with this diagonal ending in the left corner and the marble reflections sculpted by a dim light make it a masterpiece.
