Dream scènes

Leonard Sarluis

1874 – 1949

pair of oils on panels 46 X 38 cm, mounted in dark wood frames Hellenistic with tori decoration 61 X 52 cm. Tiled panels (arrow 18 mm). Circa 1920. The artist, born Salomon-Léon Sarluis in The Hague, took the pseudonym Leonardo in homage to the Renaissance genius Da Vinci with whom he felt a deep affiliation. Naturalized French, he delivered works close to the Rose+Croix aesthetic, mixed with symbolism and Pre-Raphaelism, often in a range of ochre and bistre tones further reinforcing the dreamlike atmosphere of these scenes. Ours, unsigned but characteristic, are reminiscent of the paintings of Blake and Füssli, with these characters who have ventured into hell inhabited by enormous snakes and lost souls under the surveillance of seraphim… Do not hesitate to ask us for photos or additional information by email or telephone.
